Geek.Kon is an annual multi-genre fan convention based in Madison Wisconsin. Geek.Kon was originally conceived by a group of students and alumni that wished to create a convention in Madison to celebrate more than just anime, or science fiction or gaming. After much planning and assistance from the University of Wisconsin-Madison the first Geek.Kon took place in the University of Wisconsin-Madison Humanities building over two days in October 2007 with free admission. The first Geek.Kon was a resounding success, surpassing all expectations and the following year went much the same. However, after the 2008 convention questions were brought up about the sustainability of holding the convention at the University and the decision was made to separate from the University, move to a hotel, extend to three days, and start charging admission to cover the costs and expand programming.
In 2009 Geek.Kon looked to far exceed the quality and experiences of the first two years by bringing in a larger, more diverse group of guests, greatly expanded vendor opportunities, live musical entertainment, greater number of panels and events, and all night viewings and video gaming. With 1036 paid attendees and a total attendance of 1160 the convention grew from the 1144 total attendance count of 2008 despite the transition from a free convention and the change in location to become the largest fan convention in the Madison area. In 2010 Geek.Kon continues to grow by leaps and bounds, having more space than any other convention in the state, offering one of the largest and most extensive video game rooms in the midwest, and expanding programming in all areas.
Following its founding principles Geek.Kon is still dedicated to bringing together all aspects of Geekdom under one roof from anime to sci-fi to gaming and more, for the benefit of all. In line with this ideology one can expect to find programming, events, and guests to suit a variety of "Geeky" tastes. It is through these means that Geek.Kon strives to give each attendee a great time while also expanding their horizons as to what Geekdom has to offer.
