I know it's the anime forums, but we don't have a manga forum and the two are related...:P

I want to read more manga, but don't know where to start. I've barely read anything, so most all of it is new to me. What manga have you read, that you thought was really, really good and would recommend to someone? I'll read most anything.

Thank you! ^^

I've only just started reading manga. But I got totally roped into Absolute Boyfriend, which I don't recommend. But I really loved Read or Die. Also, I've started reading Tokyo Mew Mew, but it's too early to tell if I like it or not. Something you may consider reading would be the Hellboy comics. They're not manga, but they have a different feel to them than regular comics that you may enjoy. I guess it all depends what kind of manga you're looking for. People keep recommending I read XXXholic or Fruit Baskets, but you may be more into to Inyuasha, which you can find in its original Japanese. If you're looking for something long term, maybe Bleach, Naruto, or even One Piece.

If you like high school shoujo with some drama but not a lot, I recommend:
Boys Over Flowers
Fruits Basket
Fall in Love Like a Comic
High School Debut
Monkey High
Hana-Kimi
Kare Kano

If you like your shoujo with a generous helping of angst and a serious side order of drama, I recommend:
NANA
Honey and Clover
Sand Chronicles
Hot Gimmick
Honey Hunt

If you like things that are shoujo, but also kinda sci-fi/fantasy, I recommend:
Vampire Knight
Fushigi Yuugi (if you don't mind stupid dumb girl main characters)
After School Nightmare

If you like things that are not technically shoujo but are not technically NOT shoujo but are good, probably sci-fi/fantasy (and mostly have really pretty boys in them), I recommend:
Black Sun, Silver Moon
Descendants of Darkness
Blood+
Tokyo Babylon
X/1999
xxxHolic
Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle
Fullmetal Alchemist
Saiyuki (and Saiyuki Reload)
Blank Slate
Ghost Hunt
Shadow Star

If you want to laugh at something ridiculous, yet good, I recommend:
Welcome to the NHK
Yotsuba &
Yakitate! Japan

If you want some serious drama and don't mind really sketchy borderline relationships, I insist that you read:
Loveless

If you want to read things with action.....then see above titles:
Fullmetal Alchemist
Shadow Star
Saiyuki
Blank Slate
X/1999

All other things...I generally don't like to read, so I'm not really the expert.

That is all for now. There are probably more that I'm totally forgetting and I should feel bad about forgetting.

I'm quite into reading horror manga so I recommend
Manhole (I don't believe this is licensed in the US)
Spiral
Parasyte

On the horror/suspense front, I recommend Monster and 20th Century Boys, both by Naoki Urasawa.

If you're into yakuza and political whatnot I'd recommended Sanctuary. However, be ready for a decent amount of sex, rape, and violence. The only bad thing about this manga is that it's been out of print for a number of years and is therefore hard to get a hold of. But, you can usually find them used on Amazon.

I'm also only getting started in the wonderful world of manga, but I have just started reading Detroit Metal City in Japanese. I really recommend it unless you don't know kanji or don't have a dictionary as there's no furigana. ちょっと面倒くさいよ。

Well, there's this one called Kazan, but it's out of print. My uncle got it for me for Christmas one year without realizing I read it at the library and loved it XD

Um, I also like Magic Kaito and DNAngel.

Yes, I do like fictional thieves, what gave it away?

There's a lot of other stuff I like, but I'm not gonna list it all.
